There are many ideas that don’t go beyond the prototype stage. Sometimes this is because they are complicated to produce, are not suited to the market, or have been made solely for purposes of research. The new online platform Myprototype.it will act as a showcase for designs and maquettes, models and prototypes or one-off products by both established and emerging designers. It is aimed at anyone interested in discovering, or perhaps collecting one-offs that embody a moment in history or a phase in the design process of a particular object. There are currently over 100 maquettes and prototypes on Myprototype.it, illustrated through images, videos and technical specifications, from design studios and manufacturers. Examples include designs for 3D printers and objects designed for self-production. Every design on the platform is accompanied not only by technical specifications and a review written by historians and critics in the field, but provides further information in the form of video interviews with designers, craftsmen and entrepreneurs. The general public now have a chance to look inside designers’ archives. And Myprototype.it becomes not only an online sales platform, but also a tool for designers and lovers of contemporary design
